Austrian Theatre Museum

Armed with my camera, I went in search of fashion on Vienna’s streets. I saw a museum poster of a beautiful white dress, with azure and green flowers, and royal blue front panel. I followed the sign to the Theatre Museum. I ran around taking pictures of flamboyant clothes at its costume exhibition.

The Theatre Museum is located in the first district, in Palais Lobkowitz. There are so many palais all over Vienna. These buildings were once extravagant homes belonging to noble families. Palais are characterised by their courtyard on the ground floor and the information plaques outside on the wall, framed by two red and white Austrian flags. Today, these buildings usually serve as offices, museums or embassies. Palais Lobkowitz was owned by the Lobkowitz family, one of the oldest Bohemian (Czech) noble families to still exist. The palais officially opened as the Theatre Museum in October 1991, after housing society events, the French Embassy and French Cultural Institute. Overall, the museum has more than one and half million artefacts.
